Rooted in Strength: The Women Behind Café Don Rafa

Rooted in Strength: The Women Behind Café Don Rafa

5/10/2025

High in the lush mountains of the Cordillera del Bálsamo in El Salvador, something extraordinary is happening. Amid the winding paths, shaded coffee trees, and early morning mist, a group of women is quietly transforming lives — one coffee harvest at a time.

These women are part of the Asociación de Mujeres Cafetaleras de la Cordillera del Bálsamo — a collective of female coffee growers dedicated to sustainable farming, community empowerment, and producing some of the finest coffee in El Salvador.

A Legacy of Labor and Love

Coffee farming in El Salvador has deep roots, often passed down through generations. But for many years, the work and wisdom of women in these communities went unrecognized. The Asociación was founded to change that.

This cooperative gives women ownership over the land they farm, the coffee they grow, and the income they earn. With training, tools, and collective strength, they’ve turned small family plots into vibrant, community-run micro-farms — all while protecting the natural beauty of the Cordillera del Bálsamo.

What Makes Their Coffee Special?

Beyond the ethical and environmental impact, there’s the simple truth: the coffee tastes amazing.

Their beans grow in rich volcanic soil, under a canopy of trees, and are handpicked at peak ripeness. The women take care with every step — from sorting and washing to drying and roasting — resulting in coffee with smooth body, bright acidity, and deep flavor.

At Café Don Rafa, we’re proud to share their work with you. When you drink our coffee, you’re supporting these women directly — their families, their farms, and their futures.

A Taste That Gives Back

Buying coffee from the Asociación isn’t just about great flavor (though we’ll admit, that helps). It’s about choosing a product that uplifts women, honors the land, and connects you to the real people who make it all possible.

Next time you sip your morning brew, know that it came from a farm filled with laughter, hard work, and generations of tradition — all led by strong, skilled women growing something beautiful in the mountains of El Salvador.
